The church’s foundation

The Bible has a lot to say about firm foundations. Many of us have sung about wise people building on rock and foolish people building on sand… St Peter wrote that the church is built from living stone… and we have come to understand that the Christian church is built upon the sure foundation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, in Stanhope, dry rot had taken the floorboards… and therefore we have had to revisit the physical foundations of St Thomas Church.

A site visit in the end of March 2026 and we can see the large pipes which will hold the water for the underfloor heating are being laid in trenches to the three zoned areas. All of this area will be filled with foundation material that will allow temperature and moisture variations to be absorbed by the flooring rather than crack it open. This work should give reasonably warm toes to many generations of worshippers to come.

We are still hoping to reopen in June 2026.
